Department Functions

Directorate of Physical Planning
Provision of advisory and national Physical Planning services; general principles on land planning and coordination of planning by counties in terms of policies, standards and guidelines and technical assistance;  capacity building for counties on Physical Planning.
 
Directorate of Land Adjudication and Settlement
Ascertainment of land rights and interests, land consolidation and adjudication; acquisition of agriculturally viable land for settlement of poor landless Kenyans; management of the Agricultural Settlement Fund; management of group ranches as well as arbitration of land disputes.
 
Directorate of Surveys
The official Government agency for land surveying and mapping.  Responsibilities include production, maintenance and distribution of accurate geographical data in the form of analogue and digital maps in all ranges of scales.
 
Directorate of Land Administration
Administration and management of private land, control and regulation of land use and property in respect of all categories of land and maintenance of land records.
 
Directorate of Valuation
Valuation of land and assets for stamp duty, Government leasing including foreign missions, asset valuation, rating and development of National Land Value Index.
 
Directorate of Land Registration
Registration of land transactions and other legal documents, and determination of land and boundary disputes in collaboration with Surveys Department.


Statutory Agencies
Land Surveyors' Board (LSB) - Established under the Survey Act (Cap. 299), the Board’s mandate is to regulate the surveying profession in Kenya by overseeing and controlling the practice of surveying. Its key focus areas include land measurement, mapping, and cadastral surveys.

Valuers Registration Board (VRB)
- Established under the Valuers Act (Cap. 532), the Board regulates valuation practice in Kenya by promoting professional competence, ethical conduct, and integrity within the profession. Its primary focus is the valuation of property and assets.

Physical Planners Registration Board (PPRB)
- Established under the Physical and Land Use Planning Act, 2019, the Board regulates the practice of physical and land-use planning by promoting sustainable land-use planning. Its key focus is spatial and land-use planning.
