Lands CS Opens Malindi Land Offices, Urges Kilifi Residents to Collect 33,000 Unclaimed Title Deeds

MALINDI, July 17, 2025

Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Alice Wahome, officially opened the Malindi Land office today.

This marks a major milestone in land administration in the Coast region, where land issues have long been a significant challenge.

Speaking at the Malindi Land office, CS Wahome said the new facility—serving the Malindi and Magarini sub-counties—is expected to significantly enhance service delivery and accessibility for local residents.

During the ceremony, CS Wahome made a passionate appeal to residents of Kilifi County to collect their land title deeds, revealing that over 33,000 titles remain unclaimed.

“Now that the titles are near you, please come pick them. Take care of your titles and don’t sell land carelessly. Titles are not safer in lands offices than in your hands,” said Wahome.

The CS announced that 7,730 title deeds are ready for immediate issuance from the new Malindi office, including: Weru Group Ranch (5,881 titles), Mwele Simakeni (1,363 titles), and Msabaha (486 titles).

CS Wahome emphasized the urgency of settling all outstanding adjudication cases and distributing titles, stating that landowners should pay their land dues in order to receive their title deeds.

Addressing issues around land ownership by non-citizens, the CS reiterated that foreign nationals are not entitled to freehold land, but can instead be granted 99-year leaseholds. She encouraged those holding incorrect titles to return them for proper conversion.

The CS also pledged to tackle challenges posed by land cartels, urging all stakeholders to work together to ensure transparency and fairness in land transactions.

She further underscored the importance of land in enabling key development projects and highlighted the expansion of Malindi Airport as a regional development priority.

CS Wahome noted that Kilifi County currently has: 40 Registered Adjudication Sections, 178,041 Registered Parcels, 6 Ongoing Adjudication Sections, including: Kibokoni Settlement Scheme ,Chakama Phase 3, Adu Kamale Pumwani Phase 3, Adu Chamali and Wakala.

She also assured residents that her Ministry is working to strengthen and streamline the functions of the county’s two Land Control Boards.

Speaking during the event, Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro urged Lands officers to assist Kenyans as efficiently as possible and expressed his delight at the opening of the new land offices.
