Stakeholders Convene to Collaborate on the Digitization and Automation of Land Records in Isiolo

ISIOLO, June 26, 2025

The State Department for Lands and Physical Planning is organizing a stakeholders’ engagement forum in Isiolo, reaffirming its commitment to supporting the rollout of Ardhisasa, Kenya’s innovative digital land information management platform.

The ongoing engagement, held at El- Boran Hotel in Isiolo, brought together key stakeholders from the Isiolo County Government, the National Land Commission (NLC), the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Ministry of Defence, Kenya Prisons, Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), Lamu Port South -Sudan- Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPSSET) and Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), among others.

The forum aims at laying the groundwork for the deployment of Ardhisasa in Isiolo County. Isiolo has a complex land tenure system encompassing community, public, and conservation lands. The digital platform is expected to streamline land transactions, improve data integrity, and enhance public trust in land administration.

Speaking during the meeting, Monica Obongo, Director of the National Land Information Management System (NLIMS), announced that over 2,200 land parcel records in Isiolo are ready for digitalization.

"Isiolo presents both unique opportunities and complex challenges in land governance. The successful implementation of Ardhisasa in this region will largely depend on strong collaboration between the National and County Governments, as well as with private and public institutions and community stakeholders," she emphasized.

The forum is supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO Kenya) under the FAO–EU Digital Land Governance Programme. Participants are engaging in discussions on data readiness, technical infrastructure, capacity building, and policy frameworks necessary for a smooth transition to digital land records.

Also in attendance were FAO’s Natural Resources Management Specialist, Michael Gitonga, who reaffirmed the organization’s role as a partner in the process.

Senior officials from the State Department for Lands and Physical Planning in attendance include: Jesse Waithaka (Director, Kenya Institute of Surveying and Mapping), Cyrus Mbogo (Director Central Planning) Leonard Maritim (Director ICT), John Maina (Deputy Director of Surveys)and Jibril Adan (Head of Public Communications).

With stakeholder alignment and continued support, Isiolo is now poised to become one of the frontier counties in Northern Kenya to adopt and benefit from digital land governance systems.
