State Department for Lands Wraps Up Public Participation in Land Value Index across 3 counties
Lamu, June 27, 2025
Public engagement is playing a key role in the development of Kenya’s Land Value Index (LVI), as the State Department for Lands and Physical Planning concludes forums in Lamu, Migori and Homa Bay, counties.
The forums allow communities and stakeholders to contribute to and better understand how land values are assessed, ensuring the index reflects local realities and promotes fairness.
Speaking in Mokowe, Lamu County, Assistant Director for Valuation in the State Department for Lands and Physical Planning Ann Kamau appreciated the progress made up to the present moment.
“So far, 30 counties have completed public participation, 11 are at competition stages, and 6 are yet to start due to challenges like insecurity and community land dynamics,” said Ann Kamau.
The Land Value Index, established under the Land Value (Amendment) Act, 2019, supports transparent land valuation for planning, taxation, and compensation. Once public input is collected, valuation officers create detailed spatial maps based on data from identified submarkets.
The index is reviewed every five years to keep up with evolving land use and market trends. Present also was the Lamu County Director of Physical Planning Patrice Lumumba.
